A NextGen student team working with Quantum (QEP) presented this February 2025 readout for OpenMinds on methane abatement among small and mid-sized natural gas producers. Ainee Athar, Amanda Studebaker, Anita Chandrahas and Edward Apraku drew on 14 interviews with gas producers, policy experts, technology providers, NGOs and academics.
Key points
- About 565,000 low-producing wells may account for up to 50% of U.S. methane pollution while producing only 6% of the country's natural gas.
- Small operators face tight margins and limited staff (the average independent operator has 12 employees), with over 200 technology providers to choose from.
- Three equipment fixes can cut nearly half of methane leaks: leak detection and repair (about 11%), replacing high-bleed pneumatic controllers (about 23%) and vapor recovery units on compressors (about 14%).
- Other recommendations: focus on the highest-emitting basins such as the Gulf Coast and Anadarko, build buyer demand for low-methane gas, and work with state regulators.
